Lesson Objective:

The children will learn more of the miracles surrounding Jesus as a baby.

Scripture:

Luke 2:21-40

Arrival:

Sing Christmas songs as the children arrive.

Prayer:

Thank the Lord for all of the miracles He sent to prove that Jesus was, in fact, the Messiah.

Lesson:

In Jewish law, baby boys had to be presented at the temple not long after they were born. Mary and Joseph knew that they needed to present baby Jesus at the temple, so they traveled to Jerusalem to present their new baby. This is similar to the baby dedications that Christian parents have today.

While they were at the temple, Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus met two very special people. The first one was an old man named Simeon. Simeon was a very righteous man, and he had been waiting for the Messiah to come for many, many years. He had been praying that the Lord would allow him to see the Messiah in his lifetime The Holy Spirit told him that he would be able to see the Messiah before he died. The Spirit led him to the temple on the day that Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus. Mary allowed Simeon to hold the baby, and when he did he told her “This child will see the rise and fall of many in Israel. Through him, a sword will pierce through your own soul that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Simeon was prophesying about Jesus death! Even at just a few weeks old, many were realizing how special Jesus was.

But the surprises at the temple were not over. Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus also met Anna, an elderly prophetess. She was over 90 years old and spent all her days at the temple. When she saw the little family, she approached them, praising the Lord for sending the Messiah.

What an amazing day! It was clear from these events that Jesus was a very special baby. Not long after this, he would be visited by special guests bringing very special gifts, which is where the tradition of the Christmas gift came from. The Bible says that Mary kept all of these things and pondered, or thought about them, in her heart. I can imagine it was difficult to hear that her soul would be pierced through her son’s death, yet she knew that Jesus had a very important task ahead of him, the task of providing salvation to the world.

Memory Verse:

Help the children learn portions of Luke 2 – Quoting this passage in front of the church as a group is an excellent idea for a Christmas program addition.

Craft/Game:

Make the 3D Star Craft.

Dismissal:

Remind the children that amidst all of the Santa and gifts, they need to remember the real reason that we celebrate Christmas.

Lesson Objective:

The children will learn where the idea of giving gifts at Christmas originated.

Scripture:

Matthew 2

Arrival:

As the children arrive, talk to them about a favorite Christmas gift they have either received or given. Sing Christmas songs.

Prayer:

Thank the Lord for His gift of Jesus Christ.

Lesson:

Ask the children if they have any idea who gave the first Christmas gift. Take responses. They will likely talk about Santa Claus. They may even talk about the shepherds (who may have given sheep to baby Jesus, but this is not recorded in the Bible). Then, tell the story:

We know the first people to welcome baby Jesus into the world were the shepherds, but the Bible doesn’t tell us whether or not the shepherds gave Jesus any gifts. It does, however, tell us of some others who did.

When Jesus was born, some men who lived in the East saw something. They saw a brilliant star in the heavens, one that they had never seen before. We do not know much about these men, but chances are they were learned men, maybe even scientists, who spent many days studying the heavens. They knew according to the star’s position and prophecy they had studied that the star meant a king had been born. They set out right away to visit the king. We call these men the “wise men.” In most Christmas stories and songs, we say there were three of them, but the Bible does not tell us how any there were. (Read Matthew 2 aloud to prove this).

Before the wise men left on their journey, they discussed the best possible gift for the newborn king. After all, they could not come to meet a king without something precious. They brought three things: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We know what gold is, and this is obviously a valuable gift for a king, but what are frankincense and myrrh? These were very valuable oils that were sometimes used to burry people and preserve their bodies. Maybe the wise men knew that one day Jesus would have to die for His people.

The journey took a long time. In your Christmas storybooks you probably see the wise men kneeling by the manger scene, but this is not what happened. The Bible says that the wise men came to a house where the child (Jesus) was. Jesus was probably a couple of years old when they came.

The wise men followed the star to Israel, and they went to the leader Herod’s palace. They explained that they had followed the star and wanted to meet the new king.

Herod, however, was not excited about a new king. He did not want someone to take his place. He told the wise men, “The scriptures say the king will be born in Bethlehem. Go, find him, and tell me where he is so I can worship him too!”

Herod didn’t want to worship baby Jesus. He wanted to kill him!

The wise men did not know this, so they agreed. They traveled to Bethlehem, still following the star, until it stopped over the house where Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lived. They gave their gifts to the child and spent some time worshiping him. During the night, an angel came in a dream and warned the wise men about Herod’s plan. They did not tell Herod where the child was, but left a different way.

So that is the story of the first Christmas gift. Today on Jesus’ birthday, we give each other gifts to remember what the wise men did. We can also remember the ultimate gift, the gift of a Savior, which was given on the first Christmas so many years ago.

Memory Verse:

Help the children learn Matthew 2:11b. This verse will help them remember the three gifts the wise men gave.

Craft/Game:

Color the wise man picture or find an appropriate image of your own. Be careful not to use one showing the wise men visiting an infant, as this is not accurate.

Dismissal:

Remind the children to think of the gift of Jesus this Christmas.

Lesson Objective:

The children will learn the Christmas story from a new viewpoint.

Scripture:

Luke 2

Arrival:

As the children arrive, sing Christmas carols with them, even if you are teaching the story at another time of year.

Prayer:

Thank the Lord for the greatest gift of all – His Son Jesus.

Lesson:

(Show the children a picture or toy representing a lamb. This will be the main character of the story)

Boys and Girls, this little lamb’s name is Isaiah, and a long time ago he saw something amazing. It all started one night while Isaiah and his family were resting on the side of a hill. The sun had just set and the shepherds were reclining to enjoy a night of sleep while watching their sheep.

Suddenly, the entire sky lit up! It looked like daytime, only it was the middle of the day. The shepherds looked up in wonder and fear. Isaiah here ran behind his mom. He was scared! Nothing like this had ever happened to him.

Isaiah looked up in the sky and saw a man, or what looked like a man. This man was different, though. He wore a long white robe and glowed like the sun. Do you know what he was? An angel, that’s right!

The angel said, “Fear not, for behold I bring you glad tidings of great joy!”

“For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord”

“And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, laying in manger.”

As soon as the angel said that, the sky exploded with light. Thousands of angels were in the sky, and they started to sing: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men.”

Isaiah was excited! He didn’t understand everything the angels had said, but he knew this was one special baby. Suddenly, one of the shepherds reached down and picked him up. “There, there little lamb,” said the shepherd, “we’re taking you to meet a king! We can’t welcome a new baby into the world without a present, now can we?”

Isaiah was a little frightened, but he remembered what the angel had said, “Fear not!” He expected them to head to a castle to meet a king, but he was very surprised when they headed down the path to the shepherd’s town. Bethlehem was a simple farming village, not a capital city. How would they find a king there?

The shepherds raced to Bethlehem, which was the city of David. They went from stable to stable until they found one with a young girl, her fiancé, and a newborn baby. The baby was wrapped in little pieces of cloth, which Isaiah decided must be the “swaddling clothes.”

Suddenly, the shepherd who was carrying Isaiah did something startling. He laid the lamb at the baby’s side. The baby was lying in a feeding trough, a manger, on a bed of hay. “For the savior,” was all the shepherd said. The young mother thanked the shepherd, and then all of them kneeled before the new baby, paying reverence toe the new child. One of the shepherds asked the mother what the baby’s name is, and she replied, “Jesus.” This little baby was the king, the Savior the angel had told about.

Boys and girls, that is how Jesus was born – in a simple stable in Bethlehem, not in a palace where a king should be born. But Jesus was a very special kind of king – one that ruled in people’s hearts, not from a throne.

Memory Verse:

Allow the children to pretend to be a multitude of angels as they learn Luke 2:

Craft/Game Time:

Make a lamb handprint craft.

Dismissal:

Remind the children to remember the real meaning of Christmas all year long.

Lesson Objective:

The children will learn that God commands them to be thankful in everything.

Scripture:

I Thessalonians 5:18

Arrival:

As the children arrive, tell them one thing you are thankful for about them, even if it is small (like thankful they are there today). Try to make it personal. Sing some songs about giving thanks.

Prayer:

Pray a prayer of thanksgiving.

Lesson:

What are your Thanksgiving plans? (Take responses, then share your Thanksgiving Day plans.) What is your favorite part about this holiday? Do you have a special memory from a Thanksgiving in the past?

Did you know God talks about Thanksgiving in the Bible? No, He doesn’t discuss the holiday we celebrate called Thanksgiving. That holiday originated over 200 years ago when the Pilgrims feasted with their Native American friends. But the reason that they feasted on that first Thanksgiving Day was because of their belief in the Bible, and it clearly teaches about giving thanks.

In I Thessalonians 5:18, Jesus says, “In everything give thanks.”

Think about that for a moment. What does everything mean? Well, it means, everything. But what about bad things? Give thanks! What about good things? Give thanks! What about hard things? Give thanks!

Let’s talk about some of the good things we are thankful for (take responses and record them on the chalkboard.)

These are all excellent things, but I notice that they are all good things. What about bad things in your life? Can you be thankful for them?

(Insert a personal example where something “bad” happened in your life and it turned out for good in the long run.)

Remember the story of Joseph? Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery, he was thrown into prison, and at the end of his story he says, “God meant it for good.”

Even when difficult things happen, stop to thank God. You may never know the reason behind the problem, but God sent it to you for a reason, and you need to be thankful. Try to look inside the problem to find some good to thank Him for. You might be surprised what you see.

Memory Verse:

I Thessalonians 5:18 – Write the verse on the board, erasing a word at a time until the children can quote it with no words left.

Craft/Game:

Make a “Thanksgiving Turkey.” (Either paint the plates ahead of time or do it at the beginning of the lesson so they can dry while you teach.)

Dismissal:

Have each child mention one more thing they are thankful for as they leave.

Lesson Objective:

The children will understand that Mary was willing to do whatever God wanted her to do.

Scripture:

Luke 1:26-38

Arrival:

As the children arrive, ask them if they have ever had an unexpected visitor. Take the time to talk about these experiences, or share one of your own. Sing with the children.

Prayer:

Pray that the Lord will help each person in the classroom to accept His will for them.

Lesson:

Mary was a young girl who lived with her mom and dad. The Bible doesn’t tell us how old she was, but she was engaged to be married, and in Bible times girls would be engaged when they were young teenagers. One day when she was in her home, probably doing her work for the day, she had an unexpected visitor.

As Mary was doing her work, she looked up to see a man standing near her. While he looked like a man, she knew he was more than that. He was an angel. The angel Gabriel in fact. Gabriel looked at Mary and said, “Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.”

This was a highly unusual greeting, and it bothered Mary a lot. What did this angel want? What did he mean about her being “highly favored?” She was nothing special. She was just a common girl who was marrying a common man.

The angel could tell that she was confused, and he said, “Fear not, Mary. For thou hast found favor with God.”

The angel went on to tell her that she was going to have a baby! That baby would be very special. He would not just be any baby, but would be the “Son of the Highest.” The Messiah!

At this time, the entire Jewish nation was waiting in anticipation for the Messiah. Many young girls were hoping they would be chosen to be His mother. This was wonderful news.

But there was one problem. Mary was not married. How could she have a baby without a husband? She asked Gabriel this question.

Gabriel answered, “The Holy Ghost will come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Then Gabriel said, “For with God, nothing shall be impossible.”

In Bible times, an unmarried woman who had a baby was considered to be in great sin. She was shunned and looked down upon. While carrying the Messiah should have been a great honor, and in many ways it was, it was going to make Mary’s life hard for a while. She would have to tell Joseph, her fiancé, that she was having a baby, and he would think she had been unfaithful to him. He might even refuse to marry her.

In spite of these concerns, Mary told the angel, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”

Those are fancy words that we don’t use today, but what Mary was saying was, “I will do what you say, even if it is hard. Let the Lord do what He wants in my life.”

Because Mary was willing to be the mother of Jesus, even though it would not be easy, we have a way to get to heaven today. There will probably come a time in your life when God will want you to do something that is hard. When that time comes, remember Mary and the way she accepted what God wanted her to do.

Memory Verse:

Learn Luke 1:37 with the children. Start by writing the verse on the board. Divide the class into two groups, and quote the verse, alternating between each group for each word. In other words, the first group will say the first word (for) and then you will point to the second group for the second word (with) and continue. Do this several times until the verse has been learned.

Craft/Game:

Make a Popsicle stick angel with the children. Remind them that this is not what Gabriel really looked like, but that angels help us remember God’s messengers.

Dismissal:

Tell the children to remember Mary’s willingness during the week when something happens that they might not want to have happen.

Lesson:

Today is Father’s Day. What is that all about? (take responses) Father’s Day is a day we honor our dads. Did you know that this is something the Bible actually tells us to do? No, the Bible doesn’t command us to celebrate Father’s Day, but it does talk about how we should treat our dads.

Have you ever heard of the Ten Commandments? These were some of the first rules God gave to man. He gave them to Moses for the Israelites to follow. One of the rules was to “honor your father and mother.” If God’s first rulebook talked about how we treat our parents, don’t you think it is pretty important?

What does it mean to honor someone? (take responses) Honoring someone means telling him how much you care about him and how special he is to you. Telling your dad “I love you” and giving him a big hug is one way to honor him. You can also honor someone by talking nice about him to other people. When you complain about your dad, you are not honoring him. When you brag about him, you are.

Honoring someone is sometimes called respecting him. To respect someone is to hold them in high regard. This means you think a lot of them. In other words, you think your dad is one great guy!

Does this mean your dad is always going to be perfect? Nope, your dad is a person, and people make mistakes. However, you need to treat your dad as though he is the greatest man on the planet. That is respecting and honoring your dad, and it pleases God.

The Bible also tells us to obey our mommies and daddies. Does anyone know Ephesians 6:1? (take responses, then read the verse from your Bible) What does it mean to obey your parents? (take responses) Obeying is when you do what your parents ask you to do.

Sometimes your dad is going to tell you to do something that doesn’t make sense. When he does, remember two things. First, remember that he was a kid once, and he knows things that you don’t know. Second, remember that God commands you to obey your dad. After you have obeyed, your dad may be able to tell you why you needed to do that thing. But always obey first.

Maybe you don’t have a dad. Remember, you have a heavenly Father who loves you and sent His Son to die on the cross for your sins. If your father is not here, God is with you, even on Father’s Day.

Memory Verse:

Have the children learn Ephesians 6:1. Some children may already know it. Have a small prize for any children who can quote the verse at the end of the hour.

Lesson Objective:

The children will learn the gospel story.

Scripture:

Jeremiah 31:3, Hebrews 9:22, John 1:12, Romans 3:23, 6:23, 10:9, I John 1:9

Arrival:

As the children arrive, tell them they will be reading a very special book. Do not tell them much about the book, but tell them that it is different than any book they have ever seen. Sing a few favorite songs. Include “Jesus Loves Me” and “My God Is So Big!” in the list.

Prayer Time:

When you pray, thank God for His gift of salvation.

Lesson:

This lesson is based on the Wordless Book. Have a large Wordless Book to display to the class. Begin by flipping through the book and asking the children what they notice (there are no words or pictures). Tell them that this is the most wonderful story in the whole world, but the book tells it without any words or pictures – just colors!

Go through the pages in this order:

Gold (Yellow) – Ask a child to identify the color. Tell the children that the yellow color represents gold. Ask them if they have ever seen something made from gold. Tell them that Heaven, where God lives, has streets made out of gold. Tell them it is a beautiful place and that God wants them to live there with Him someday. In fact, He prepared a place in Heaven for all of his children. He loves us that much! (Jeremiah 31:3) However, there is something that will keep every person from being in heaven.

Black (Dark) – (Be sure to refer to this page as Dark and not Black because of racial connotations with the world Black). The dark page represents sin. Romans 3:23 says that “all have sinned.” Ask the children what types of sins they have done. Tell them some sins you have done. Tell them that everyone, no matter how good they are, has done something wrong. God loves us and wants us to be in Heaven, but He cannot let sin in there, so we have a big problem. Remind the children that God is all-powerful, so He provided an answer to this problem.

Red – Tell the children that sin has a consequence, or punishment (Romans 6:23). That punishment is death. Everyone has to die because of sin. When we die, we either go to Heaven or Hell. Sin cannot be in Heaven, but God provided a way for us to have our sins covered so we can go to Heaven in spite of our sin. That was through His son Jesus Christ. Jesus was born and lived a perfect life. He was the only man who never sinned. He died on the cross and shed His blood to cover our sins. The red represents His blood. Read Hebrews 9:22 and tell the children that Jesus’ blood paid the price for our sins. Then, tell them about His resurrection. Since He beat death, we can accept His gift of salvation and live in heaven when we die!

White – This is the clean page. The Bible says in John 1:12 that anyone who receives Him (Jesus) can become the child of God. Romans 10:9 says all you have to do is confess and believe that Jesus was raised from the dead. Tell the children that becoming a child of God involves three things. First, you have to recognize that you are a sinner. Then, you have to believe that Jesus was God’s son, died for you, and rose again. Finally, you have to ask Him to be your Savior.

(Do not pressure children to make this decision. Simply present the information and answer questions that may come up. It is very important that you do not lead children to pray if they do not fully understand.)

Green – After we become God’s children, we need to grow, just like green plants. The way Christians grow is through reading the Bible, going to church, and praying. Remind the children that even as Christians, we will still sin, but I John 1:9 tells us to confess those sins and God will forgive them.

Blue – Blue can represent baptism, if you have any children who are saved but not baptized. It can also represent Christ’s eventual return in the heavens. You can talk about both things, depending on the readiness of the children.

Memory Verse:

Work with the children to memorize I John 1:9.

Craft:

Make wordless book caterpillars with the children. Review the colors and what they mean when you do.

Dismissal:

Take the time to answer any questions. If a child is ready to accept Christ, find someone who can pray with him or her privately. Have the children use the caterpillars to tell the story to each other as review before you leave.

Lesson Objective:

The children will understand that the real meaning of Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Scripture:

Matthew 27-28

Arrival:

As the children arrive, talk to them about Easter. This lesson works best if presented on the holiday. Find out what they expect to get for Easter. Learn whether or not they do an Easter egg hunt. Then, sing with them. Sing “God is so Good,” and be sure to sing the verses that state “He died for me” and “He rose again.”

Prayer Time:

Pray for the lesson, thanking God for His gift of His son on the first Easter.

Game:

Before the children arrive hide Easter eggs around the classroom. Fill some with the items from the Easter Story Eggs. Fill the rest with a slip of paper with one word from the memory verse written on it. Let each child have a small basket to search for the eggs after singing time. When they are done, instruct them to search through their basket and pull out any eggs that have a number on them. These will be used in the lesson. The rest of the eggs should be placed under the chair.

Lesson:

Start the lesson by reminding the children that Easter isn’t all about eggs and chocolate and bunnies. Tell them that we celebrate the holiday for a very special reason. Then, open the eggs one by one, using the items inside to tell the story.

Egg 1 – A leaf – This reminds us of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people were so excited to see him that they waved palm branches and cheered for him. (Matthew 21:1-11) This happened one week before Easter. Today we celebrate this as Palm Sunday.

Egg 2 – A piece of bread – After the Triumphal Entry, Jesus and His disciples entered the upper room to enjoy the Passover meal. This is known as the Last Supper. Summarize Matthew 26:17-19 with the children. Tell them that this was the last time Jesus would eat before He died.

Egg 3 – Three dimes (real or plastic) – Tell the children that Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, betrayed him to the chief priests for just 30 pieces of silver. (Matthew 27:3)

Egg 4 – Thorn – Tell the children that after Judas betrayed Jesus, the Savior was arrested. The people wanted Him to be killed, and the soldiers put a crown made of thorns on His head. (John 19:2)

Egg 5 – Scourge (or thick string) – Describe how Jesus was beaten before He was killed. Keep this true, but age appropriate. (Mark 15:15)

Egg 6 – Cross (Popsicle sticks or twigs in a cross shape) – Tell the children that Jesus had to carry His cross to a place called Golgotha, which means “The Place of the Skull.” (John 19:17-18a)

Egg 7 – Piece of cloth – When Jesus was crucified, the soldiers made bets in order to take his garment. He was also forced to wear a purple robe while they made fun of Him for being the King of the Jews. (John 19:23)

Egg 8 – Nail – Jesus was nailed to the cross (hands and feet). He was also pierced in His side. (John 19 and 20)

Egg 9 – Sponge – Tell about how Jesus was given vinegar and wine on sponge to drink. Then, He died, crying “My God My God, Why has thou forsaken me!” and “It is finished.” (Matthew 27)

Egg 10 – Rock – After Jesus died, His disciples took His body and placed it in a tomb. A stone was rolled over the opening, and guards were placed there to keep people from stealing the body. However, three days after He was crucified, His disciples returned to the tomb, and the stone was rolled away! (John 20:1)

Egg 11 – Napkin – When the disciples looked inside the tomb, it was empty! All that was there was the napkin that had covered Jesus’ face and His grave clothes. He was gone, because He had risen from the dead! (John 20:6-7)

Egg 12 – Flower – A flower in the spring represents new life, and that is what Jesus is able to offer by conquering death and rising from the dead on the first Easter.

Close with a simple gospel presentation. Explain that Jesus had to die because we are all sinners. Jesus was God and lived a perfect life, so He could serve as our substitute by dying on the cross and bearing our sins when He did. By rising from the dead, Jesus conquered sin and death and can offer us eternal life when we ask Him to forgive us of our sins and become our savior.

Memory Verse:

Open the remaining eggs, which contain the words to Romans 10:9. Have the children reassemble the verse, then practice it a few times together. Then, jumble up the words, and give the children each a chance to put them back together again.

Dismissal:

As you dismiss the children, give them each an empty egg to take home. Tell them that it is empty to remind them of the empty tomb and the fact that Jesus conquered death and rose again on the first Easter!
