Here are a few songs that work well with the Life of Christ lessons.

The Apostle’s Song (Tune: Jesus Loves Me)

Jesus called them one by one
Peter, Andrew, James, and John.
Next came Philip, Thomas too,
Matthew and Bartholomew.

Chorus:
Yes, Jesus called them. Yes, Jesus called them,
Yes, Jesus called them, the Bible tells me so.

James the one they called the less
Simon, also Thaddeus

The twelfth apostle Judas made,
Jesus was by him betrayed.

Chorus

Jesus Walks on the Water
(Tune: Ten Little Indians)
lyrics written and contributed by Sharon Broome

All the apostles were in a sailboat
All the apostles were in a sailboat
All the apostles were in a sailboat
Out on the deep blue sea.

The waves rose high and tossed the sailboat
The waves rose high and tossed the sailboat
The waves rose high and tossed the sailboat
Out on the deep blue sea.

Along came Jesus walking on the water
Along came Jesus walking on the water
Along came Jesus walking on the water
Out on the deep blue sea.

The apostles thought that Jesus was a ghost
The apostles thought that Jesus was a ghost
The apostles thought that Jesus was a ghost
And they cried out in fear.

Be of good cheer, it is I, don’t be afraid
Be of good cheer, it is I, don’t be afraid
Be of good cheer, it is I, don’t be afraid
Jesus spoke to them

Peter started walking on the water
Peter started walking on the water
Peter started walking on the water
Then he started to sink.

Jesus helped Peter get back in the boat
Jesus helped Peter get back in the boat
Jesus helped Peter get back in the boat
Why did you lose faith?

Five Loaves and Two Fishes
(Tune: Ten Little Indians)
lyrics written and contributed by Sharon Broome

One little boy shared his lunch
One little boy shared his lunch
One little boy shared his lunch
And Jesus fed five thousand

Five little loaves and two little fishes
Five little loaves and two little fishes
Five little loaves and two little fishes
Jesus fed five thousand.

Took the food, prayed, and broke it
Took the food, prayed, and broke it
Took the food, prayed, and broke it
Then passed it to the apostles.

Each one ate until he was full
Each one ate until he was full
Each one ate until he was full
And there were still leftovers.

Twelve basketfuls were left over
Twelve basketfuls were left over
Twelve basketfuls were left over
After each had eaten.

Whenever possible, use songs to reinforce what is being taught in the lesson. Here are some songs you can use to teach common Bible stories. They are set to popular children’s tunes. These songs came from Sunday School Ideas for New Teachers.

Story: Jericho
Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

Here we go round the Jericho Wall, Jericho Wall, Jericho Wall,
Here we go round the Jericho Wall, so early in the morning.

This is the way we blow our horns, blow our horns, blow our horns.
This is the way we blow our horns, so early in the morning.

This is the way we softly walk, softly walk, softly walk.
This is the way we softly walk, so early in the morning.

This is the way we shout out loud, shout out loud, shout out loud.
This is the way we shout out loud, so early in the morning.

This is the way the walls fall down, walls fall down, walls fall down.
This is the way the walls fall down, so early in the morning.

Story: Jonah
Tune: London Bridges Falling Down

God asked Jonah to obey, to obey, to obey,
God asked Jonah to obey, But he said No.

(Shake head from side to side)

Jonah was swallowed by a whale, by a whale, by a whale,
Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Swallowed whole!

(rub tummy)

Jonah prayed to God above, God above, God above,
Jonah prayed to God above, and was forgiven!

(put hands in praying position)

Story: Noah’s Ark
Tune: Old McDonald

Good old Noah built an ark,
Like God told him to
And on that ark he took two (insert animal here),
Like God told him to,
With a (animal sound or name) here and a (animal sound or name) there,
Good old Noah built an ark,
Like God told him to.

You may not think that singing has that much of an influence on your Sunday School class, but singing in with your children is a very important activity. It is much more than just a time filler. It fulfills several needs within the Sunday School classroom.

First, if you are teaching very young children, singing time is a chance for them to get their wiggles out. You can sing “I’m in the Lord’s Army,” “Father Abraham,” and “Read Your Bible Pray Everyday” and give the kids a chance to move and expend some energy. Older children often need this time as well.

Once the wiggles are out, singing gives you the chance to get the kids focused on the Lord. Slower, meditative songs like “Thank You Lord for Saving My Soul” help the children calm down and prepare their minds for the lesson. It also encourages the kids to sit in their seats and stop wiggling.

Singing with the kids ensures that they will take something home with them. They may not remember what you taught, but they will leave singing a song that was sung. Songs stick in the mind longer than spoken words, and this makes them a great tool to use to teach important concepts. They can also be used to teach memory verses in a fun and easy way.

Besides these benefits, singing is simply fun! Kids enjoy it, and you will too if you start incorporating it into your Sunday School class.
