When the Pharaoh of Egypt refused to let the Hebrew people go, God demonstrated a display of power and might that eventually frightened the Pharaoh into freeing the Hebrews he had made into slaves. There were ten plagues altogether. Here is the list:
1. Water to Blood. God commanded that all the pools of water, from the wells to the streams, would turn to blood. Even water in the vessels of the home turned to blood.
2. Frogs. God said He would send frogs into all the houses, even into the ovens and the kneading bowls. The frogs would climb upon every person in the household, and even show up in their beds.
3. Lice or Gnats. The dust of the land would become lice and gnats, and would wreck havoc over all of Egypt.
4. Flies. The flies would join the lice and gnats in being insufferable pests to those in Egypt, filling up all their rooms, settling on their bodies, and ruining their food stores.
5. Dead Livestock. The horses, cattle, sheep, and other livestock held by the Egyptians would die of no clear reason, and they would be without their pack animals and without those animals they used for slaughter.
6. Boils. Ashes from the furnace should be sprinkled on the wind, and they would become boils on the bodies of every man, woman, and child in the land.
7. Thunder and Hail. Hail would rain down on the land, destroying everything it touched. Hail would devastate the crops and leave the Egyptians with nothing to eat come harvest time.
8. Locusts. Anything that escaped the hail would be eaten by the locusts, which would come over the earth in such numbers that it would turn the ground black.
9. Darkness. Egypt was devoid of light for three days, during which time it was so absolute that the people could not see their hands before their faces.
10. Death of the Firstborn. At midnight on the appointed day, the firstborn of every household, and even the firstborn of every beast, would be killed.
After the tenth plague and the loss of the firstborn children, the Pharaoh called to Moses to take his people out of Egypt, so that they could worship God as they wished.
