You might have heard of the “trinity” – but what does that mean?
The word “Trinity” comes from the Latin word “trinitas,” meaning “three are one.” The Trinity is the term used to explain the Christian doctrine of God as a being. There are three distinct persons that make up God: The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit.
But how can three separate entities actually be one person? That’s a good question, and there is no simple answer. But there is a simple analogy that has been used time and time again. Look at your hand. Now, hold up three fingers. Each finger is individual, can move independently of the others, and might even have it’s own “personality” – perhaps a scar, a scratch, or something that sets it apart from the others. However, the three fingers are one unit. They function together.
This is a very elementary example of how the trinity works, but it forms a lasting impression.
To get more technical, what do many believe about the nature of the Trinity? Many Christians believe that the Trinity is made up of the three beings of God, but each of those beings has a different ability or purpose. God, or the Father, sent the Son – Jesus – to the earth to atone for the sins of man. The Son was of the Father, and could act on the Father’s behalf as he walked the earth in human form. The Holy Spirit is the final part of the Trinity, and the Holy Spirit can actually enter into a person – the Holy Spirit is responsible for “touching” followers and leading them to the Father, by using the message of the Son.
Some might say the Trinity doesn’t really exist because it is never directly mentioned in the Bible. While it is true that the word “trinity” is never used, and the Trinity as we know it is never mentioned or explained in the text, the meaning can be inferred by Scripture.
In closing, the question of the Trinity leads to an interesting bit of trivia. No, the Trinity is not mentioned in the Bible…but then again, the word “Bible” is never mentioned in any of the verses, either. The “Bible” is not a word that God made holy…it is simply the word we use to denote His book. The Trinity, in that context, is simply the word followers use to denote the Holy combination of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
