Sunday school is a common term used by many religious denominations to describe religious education for both children and adults. From all accounts Sunday school and its curriculum and lessons started in England back in the 1700’s.
The school while mostly based on Christianity is also taught in Islamic, Hinduism, Judaism and Buddhism religions as well.
Contrary to the name Sunday Schools are not recognized as educational institutes. And as such formal grades and attendance records are rarely kept. Children are encouraged to attend on a weekly basis and often receive rewards and praise for regular attendance.
Classes are usually taught before, during or after the church service. Teachers for the religious school are usually not of the clergy and are most likely appointed to the position by a committee or church elders. Few teachers are certified and most
Along with religious teachings the school can include activates such as coloring, music, games, stories and holiday teachings as well.
